FSSAI or Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. FSSAI license is mandatory before starting any food business including packaging food or spices industry.
All the manufacturers, traders, restaurants who are involved in food business must obtain a FSSAI license.
FSSAI is 14-digit registration or a license number which must be printed on food packages.
The importance of FSSAI license emanate from the fact that government wants to ensure that food products undergo certain quality checks, thereby reducing the instances of adulteration, substandard products and improve accountability of manufacturers. There are 3 types of FSSAI license mentioned below:
1. FSSAI Basic registration
FSSAI Basic registration is applicable for Small business or Startups with annual turnover below Rs.12 lakhs. The FSSA Basic registration can be upgraded to state license and can be done whenever your sales increase.
2. FSSAI State license
FSSAI State license is applicable only for mid-sized companies who has annual turnover between Rs.12 lacs to Rs. 20 crores.
3. FSSAI Central license
FSSAI Central license is applicable for business with annual turnover above Rs.20 crores. It is also required in cases where you need to supply at the government offices or import / export food products.
